Flax Horse Bedding
IS FLAX BETTER THAN SHAVINGS FOR YOUR HORSE?
Absolutely, Flax is 3 times as absorbent as shavings,
it removes the ammonia smell from stalls, has minimal dust, and it is a
100% natural product processed from Flax Straw.
Horses having breathing or allergy problems when bedded on ant wood bedding, don’t have those problems on Flax.
WILL FLAX RESULT IN LESS LABOUR BEING REQUIRED?
Absolutely, a minimum amount of bedding is lost when mucking out.
Because the Flax is so absorbent, the urine “clumps”, therefore only
those obvious wet spots have to be removed and then “topped up”.
Flax starts to break down in 30 days and totally composts in 6 months similar to any straw.
Flax compost can be field applied without removing Nitrogen and moisture
from the soil as happens with all wood based bedding materials that rob
the soil of it’s production capacity.
AN IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION, WILL FLAX SAVE MONEY?
Initial Flax coverage is approximately 1 1/2 to 3 bags per stall.
Flax only requires approx. 1 bag per week to “top up”, and that saves
you the 3-4 bags of shavings presently required for “top up” purposes.
A bag of Flax weighs 40 pounds and contains almost 35% more material
than a 3 ½ cubic foot bag of shavings. Price by container load is $4.99
per bag or $5.99 in smaller quantities.
CAN I MIX FLAX WITH OTHER BEDDING?
Yes most customer use Flax on it’s own but I have
customers mixing 3 bags of Flax with 1 bag of Pellets and say it is the
best bedding material they have ever used.
I have some customers mixing Flax with Shavings and some with chopped straw.
I suggest “playing around” with the Flax to see how it works best for your stall conditions.
Why lose a tree to produce shavings as bedding, when a better bedding
material from a renewable source that is 100% natural such as Canadian
Flax and it is readily available.
